
Roy Franklin Fleming was a man of extraordinary interests and capabilities. Born in 1878 in Derby Township, Roy came from a family that valued education and perseverance. Coming of age at the turn of the 19th century, Roy got his start in education as an elementary school teacher in Ontario, and used this as a springboard to support him in learning about art and art instruction at the New York School of Art and other schools. He had careers as an art educator, a photographer, an art critic, a historian and writer; he was an accomplished watercolour artist, and adept as a carpenter and house builder. This article reviews his life, interests, and principal accomplishments.
